The 8 Steps We Follow for Laying Block Paving in Leicester

Marking out:

This is the first step in block paving installation. During this step, we mark the exact area where the block paving will be laid. We have a construction plan ready that defines the project and the materials to be used.

Excavation:

Next, we excavate the entire area where block paving will be late. Later we dispose of this excavated spoil properly.

Sub-base:

In this step, we cover the entire area that is excavated with geo-membrane. This prevents the hardcore from migrating into the subsoils and aids drainage. We spread and compact a sub-base using type 1 mot stone or millwaste. The thickness is at least 150mm, laid in 50 mm increments, and compacted after each layer is laid

Edging stone:

The edge restraint keeps the blocks in place. We use the existing curb or lay the edging stone you prefer. The edging stones are laid and secured with at least 75mm of concrete.

Laying course:

In the fifth step, we spread, level out, and compact coarse sand using a vibrating plate. Using screeding rods or a trained rake, we hand-screed the sand to a uniform height for block paving in Leicester. The coarse sand is approximately 30mm thick and no more than 50mm.

Laying the blocks:

The blocks are pressed closely together as they settle into the coarse sand. The majority of block paving has integrated spacing burs, which leave a small joint. If this is not the case, then spacing burs are added.

Aligning and cutting in:

We ensure that the blocks are aligned as per your preferred pattern. The blocks are laid with overlapping joints to form a strong bond. Once the block paving has been laid, we cut in the blocks that meet the edges. This is done using a disc cutter or a block paving splitter. Fitting of the gully and manhole covers is also done.

Jointing:

Finally, we spread gallon, dried, jointing sand over the block paving. We ensure that the sand gets to every joint, sweep off excess sand, and compact using a vibrating plate, making a minimum of two passes. The cycle is repeated until every joint is completely covered with sand.

Frequently Asked Questions on Block Paving

Block paving is suitable for steep driveways when installed carefully and correctly by experienced block paving installers through proper sub-base preparation and edging restraints to prevent movement. The paving blocks can be laid in patterns that provide better traction compared to other paving options.

Block paving comes in a wide variety of colors, shapes, textures, and patterns. Popular options include traditional brick hues like reds and browns, modern greys, graphite, and charcoal. Different laying patterns provide unique styling.

For minor repairs to damaged or shifted blocks, a block paving contractor can remove and relay individual pavers. For larger areas, sections of paving may need to be lifted, the sub-base releveled, and blocks relayed.

Proper excavation, geotextile membrane, sub-base material of hardcore or Type 1, adequate compacting in layers, and edged restraints are critical base preparations. This provides stability, and drainage and prevents shifting of the blocks.
